
Silvia Villagran
With firm crisp lines, prominent artist splashes color and humor
b. May 1950 (Montevideo, Uruguay)
Ms. Villagran is a leading Uruguayan painter and sculptor, who studied under artists in Montevideo and Buenos Aires: painting under N. Ramos and O Garcia Reino; sculpting under O. Podesta; etchings, inks and dyes under A. Solari; and ceramics under S. Mora. She also took graduate courses specializing in Abstraction under Jaques Davy. Ms. Villagran holds a graduate degree from the National Museum (Uruguay) in sheet etching and photo-engraving, with Professor David Finkbeiner (USA) as her advisor. She also has a Master’s degree in Religious sciences and was a children’s art teacher from 1975 to 1986.
Since 1987, Ms. Villagran has worked full time for the National Cultural Heritage Commission and the Ministry of Culture in Uruguay. Her original work has a strong and unique style, often times imbued with a sharp sense of humor. Her work is found in numerous private collections in America, Asia, Europe, and Israel.
